영국에서 가장 유명한 대학은 옥스포드, 케임브리지 대학입니다. 그리고 그 다음은 어디일까요? 바로 UCL, 런던 정경대, 로열 할로웨이 등이 있는 University of London 입니다. 런던 대학교는 영국 이외의 많은 국가에 산하센터 즉, 어필리에이티드 센터(Affiliated Centre)를 운영하고 있습니다. 몰타의 런던대학교 산하센터는 SMI(Saint Martin's Institute) Higher Education입니다.

런던 대학교 학생들은 SMI에서 3년 동안의 학업으로 LSE 런던정경대, 로열 할로웨이 등의 학사 학위를 갖을 수 있습니다.
입학을 위해서는 영어성적이 필수적으로 필요합니다. 한국과 달리 영국, 몰타 등 영어권은 대부분 9월 학기가 시작입니다. 때문에 한국에서 12월에 마지막 학기를 마치고 2월에 졸업할 경우 여전히 영어를 준비 할 수 있는 시간이 있습니다. 일반적으로 한국에서 고등학교 및 대학 학기 마감인 12월 이후로 영어 및 입학 할 시간이 있습니다.

런던대학교
런던 대학교 (University of London)는 영국의 왕립 대학 연합체이다. 주로 런던에 자리 잡고 있는 18개의 대학기관과 12개의 연구기관으로 구성되어 있다. 전체적으로 볼 때 등록된 풀타임 학생수는 135,000명이며, 런던대학 학외시스템에는 약 45,000명이 추가로 등록되어 있다.
런던 대학교의 역사는 1820년대와 30년대로 올라간다. 그 당시는 잉글랜드에는 옥스퍼드와 케임브리지 대학교밖에 없었기 때문에 '인종과 종교, 정치적 입장을 초월해 모든 이에게 고등 교육을 제공한다'는 취지 아래 런던의 블룸스베리와 스트란드 지역에 각각 자유주의를 바탕으로 하여 비종교적인 유니버시티 칼리지 런던과 영국 성공회를 바탕으로 하여 종교적인 면모가 강한 킹스 칼리지 런던이 설립되었다. 하지만 초기부터 이들 두 대학 사이에 학위 수여 권한을 둘러싸고 서로 왕실의 특허장을 확보하려는 갈등이 생겨나자 이 같은 분쟁을 조정하기 위한 방편으로 1836년 제3의 기구를 설립하게 되었는데, 이것이 바로 오늘날의 런던 대학교를 태동시킨 계기가 되었다. 이후 인도 및 호주, 남아프리카 공화국 등 영국 식민지였던 국가들은 런던 대학교를 모델로 대학 체제를 세웠다.
이와 같은 역사적인 배경 아래 런던 대학교는 발전을 거듭하여 현재 모두 47개의 대학과 대학원 (Colleges and Institutes)에 12만 명의 재학생들을 망라하는 대규모의 대학 연합체가 되었다. 학문 분야도 매우 다양하게 발달해 있다. 유니버시티칼리지 런던처럼 학위수여를 별도로 하는 대학도 있으나, 소규모 대학들은 런던대학교 학위를 수여한다.
등록금 상한선 등 대학본부 (Senate House)의 정책에 불만을 가지고 있던 임페리얼 칼리지 런던은 2005년 12월 9일 탈퇴를 선언했고 2006년 10월에 런던 대학교와 최종 합의에 이르렀다. 이로써 임페리얼 칼리지 런던이 생긴 지 100주년이 되는 2007년 7월부터는 더 이상 런던 대학교 소속이 아니게 되었다.

Saint Martin's Institute of Higher Education is an Affiliate Centre for the University of London International Programmes. This is the highest level of recognition and means that in the considered view of the University of London it demonstrates a sustained commitment to developing excellence in respect of teaching, support to students and administrative processes. We are delighted that Saint Martin's Institute is a member of our network of recognised centres and we hope that being part of this network will contribute to its ongoing development and result in an even closer relationship with the University of London International Programmes. In certain circumstances, it may be possible for students to skip particular courses if it can be proved that students have already obtained qualifications in the same area. During the application process, it is vital to mention any such qualifications and we will be able to guide you accordingly. This does not automatically mean that you will be eligible for APL. Hein Chetcuti holds both a BSc Information Systems and Management and an MSc International Business from the University of London. He has also won the University of London External System 150th Anniversary Prize, after obtaining a first class honours degree in Information Systems and Management. Hein is currently an information systems specialist at Malta Freeport Terminal, and a part- time lecturer at Saint Martin's Institute.
If I want a University of London degree, why should I stay in Malta?

How do I know if the quality of classes is as good ad those at the University of London?
Being an Affiliate Centre, Saint Martin's Institute undergoes numerous checks and visits by the University of London every year.Moreover our students consistently achieve excellent results. We only keep our Affiliate Centre status by showing sustained commitment to developing excellence, and our track record proves it.
Can I study with the University of London International Programmes independently?
Although most programmes can be studied independently, there are a number of benefits to studying with a teaching centre such as Saint Martin's. This way, students receive better guidance and have a more structured learning environment. Attending group lectures will also allow students to absorb the ideas of others and be open to discussion, not simply learn the literature to pass exams.
Do you accept mature students?
Yes of course! There is no upper age limit for students.
How many students are in each class?
Saint Martin's prides itself on providing small class education and a limited number of students in each course. Most classes are no larger than 20 students.
Is everyone eligible for scholarships?
This depends on the specific scheme you are applying for. Please contact the organisers of the scheme for more details.
How will I be assessed?
University of London examinations are held during May/June. Internal examinations are held twice a year, with First Semester exams in December and Second Semester exams in March. This serves the student by assessing their understanding before the real exam and allows time for improvements and self-assessment. Assignments and projects are also a substantial part of the programme but this depends on each programme of study.
Are exams run by you or the University of London?
All examinations are set and marked in London by the College that provides academic direction for that programme. Exam invigilation is left to the Registrar of Examinations, part of the Ministry of Education, of the Government of Malta - thus ascertaining a clear line between Saint Martin's teaching role, and the University of London's examination and degree-awarding roles. Upon successful completion of their programme, the student becomes a graduate or alumni of the University of London International Programmes.
