Our newest centre is wonderfully located on one of the inner city boulevards of Riga, right between the main railway station and the National Opera. To reach the historic centre of Riga, a protected UNESCO World Heritage Site, you just need to cross the small canal on the other side of the boulevard. The whole inner city can easily be discovered walking. There are plenty of bars, coffee-shops and restaurants within easy reach of our Russian language school.
The Liden & Denz Language Centre Riga is located on the second floor of a historical building, featuring ten spacious classrooms, all with natural light and equipped with state of the art technology. There is a nice lounge area with vending machines and a computer lab. WiFi is free of charge for all students. Adjacent to the classrooms, on the same floor, there is a small but very popular student apartment (shared flat).
The inner courtyard provides another cosy place to hang out and is frequently used for barbecues.
As one of the three “Baltic States”, Latvia has experienced centuries of prosperity and conquest. Since the Middle Ages, the land in which modern day Latvia is located has been home to the native Baltic Latvians, the Vikings, Germans and most recently, many Russians. Almost since the beginning, the country’s capital city, Riga, has been at the centre of the country’s historic development.
Riga sits on the banks of the Daugava River. Once frequently used by Viking merchants as a highway to Byzantium starting in the Middle Ages, the city quickly became a trading hub for the region, attracting German merchants to the region. With the influx of peoples from the west, a crusade began to Christianize the region’s peoples and later, incorporate the city into the famous Hanseatic League. In the centuries that followed, the German merchants built what is now the city’s famous “Old Town”, with one of Europe’s most impressive collections of Art Nouveau/Jugendstil architecture.
The Liden & Denz Russian Language Centres in St. Petersburg, Moscow and Riga offer communicative Russian language courses for academic, leisure or business purposes. Learn Russian together with students from over 60 countries choosing Liden & Denz for their intensive Russian course. We are an award-winning, internationally accredited provider.
Our schools operate year round and our courses are available at all centres. Our destinations can be freely combined under the condition that start dates for group courses are met.
All our courses are based on communicative approaches and combine learning common expressions used in everyday situations with thorough and systematic grammatical approach. This is of vital importance for learning a language like Russian, which has an inflectional system and a non-fixed word order – a language in which word endings or word’s place create the meaning.
Conversational topics are given with appropriate grammar structures, while the grammar part of the course proceeds gradually from simple “basic concepts” to more complex issues in a psychologically proven order (e.g. naming objects – describing locations – actions with objects – moving to and from, etc.).
One of our most important principles consists in giving our students the linguistic means to express themselves in everyday situations by constant training of communicative skills and models, which allows learners to reach their own communicative objectives.
All our teachers are native speakers and hold a university degree either in Teaching Russian as a Foreign Language (RKI) or Linguistics. We encourage our teachers to learn new languages, because we believe that having this experience as students is a valuable source for further improvement of their professional skills.
Our teachers apply a variety of techniques ranging from introduction to the Russian language history, from etymology and comparative linguistics to role-play, live discussions and creative work (drawing, story telling) in the class.
Teacher training sessions take place on a regular basis. In a team work they share their experience, discuss the problems they recently solved, new methods and techniques they implemented and evaluate new teaching materials.

Liden & Denz is owned by co-founder Walter Denz, who grew up in Zurich, Switzerland and graduated from the University of St. Gallen (HSG) in International Relations in 1989. He moved to London for an M.Sc. degree in Political Theory at the London School of Economics and Political Science, and settled in early 1992 in post-communist Russia. Together with his partner and friend Sven Lidén, he set up the Liden & Denz Language Centre in St. Petersburg, one of the first private institutions for the teaching of Russian as a foreign language. Later, Walter ventured into tour operating (outbound) and in 2004 opened a sister school in Moscow, followed by Riga (opening in January 2014). From 2008-2011 Walter was president of the International Association of Language Centres IALC and since 2012 he is vice-chair of EAQUALS. He also is chairing the board of the Deutsche Schule St. Petersburg.
Over 20 years after our first students had received their certificates, our ever increasing student numbers are proof that learning Russian is considered a valuable asset today, apart from the fact that it is great fun.
We believe you should choose to learn Russian with us for the following reasons:
We do all this because we want you to fully enjoy your Russian language stay with Liden & Denz!
