[About UCLAN]

The University of Central Lancashire (UCLan) in Preston was founded in 1828 as the Institution for the Diffusion of Knowledge. ‘Ex solo ad solem’, or in translation, ‘From the Earth to the Sun’, has been its motto ever since – helping people from all walks of life to make the most of their potential is what UCLan’s all about. From state-of-the-art facilities and world class teaching and support to help undergraduate students succeed, to providing world-leading Astrophysics researchers with the opportunity to work with NASA and photograph the Sun, UCLan has it all.

UCLan has evolved over the years to become a world class institution, recognised with its inclusion in the 2010 QS World Rankings – the first Modern University in the UK to gain this status. The University has a global reach and in the most recent Research Excellence Framework (REF) all 16 of the subject areas we submitted were recognised as demonstrating elements of world-leading research. Applied research is critical to the development of UCLan and the REF results show the real differences the University’s research is making to the economy and communities regionally, nationally and internationally.  So whether it’s devising a blood test to detect brain tumours, uncovering a potential cause of Alzheimer’s or helping the world’s poor to gain access to vital medicines, UCLan’s research is changing lives.

Amongst its programme portfolio of some 500 undergraduate and 200+ postgraduate courses, UCLan has been at the forefront of developing degrees in the emerging disciplines of Journalism, Fashion, Forensics and Sports Science. The range of excellence extends to include the likes of Pharmacy, Architecture, Astrophysics and the first new School of Dentistry to be launched in the UK in more than a century.

[Entry Requirements]

UCLan entry requirements will vary depending on the individual course. This information will be detailed in the University prospectus, on course pages and in standard UCAS publications.

Some courses will require you to achieve specific grades and in some cases in certain subjects. Others may require you to reach a specified number of UCAS Tariff points. Many courses require the equivalent of three A2 level qualifications.

All applications should demonstrate satisfactory performance at GCSE level. We normally ask for at least five passes at grade C or above. You must pass GCSE Maths and English for all of our courses.

UCLan accepts all Advanced Level subjects for admission purposes. This includes linear and modular A Levels and General Studies.

Advanced Subsidiary Qualifications
AS Level qualifications achieved at the end of Year 12 are a useful indicator of potential. However, we will only offer a student a place based on their A Level achievement at the end of Year 13. UCLan does not make unconditional offers after one year of post-16 study.

If you are unsure whether your undergraduate qualification is equivalent to A Level study or whether it will be accepted by UCLan, view the complete and up to date qualification list provided by UCAS.

e.g. Business and Management

- 180 points at A2, MPP BTEC, GCSE Maths & English at C, or equivalent career experience.

- Applicants 21 years and over, with no specific qualifications but with appropriate career experience may apply. If they satisfy the criteria they will be invited for interview and assessment, prior to a final decision.

- Applicants under 21 and coming directly from formal education will be accepted without interview, providing they have attained 180 points.
